An old favourite, this bread is delicious served warm and spread generously with butter.
Makes 1 loaf
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
- 8oz Wholemeal flour
- 8oz Cream flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon bread soda
- 1 table spoon treacle
- 1 table spoon oil
- Some sesame seeds
- 1/2 pint butter milk
- 1/2 Pint of tepid water
- Salt and pepper
Method:
- Sieve the cream flour and salt into a bowl, then add in the wholemeal flour and bread soda.
- Mix well and add in the oil, treacle and butter milk to make a soft dough.
- Place the mixture into a greased bread tray and sprinkle the sesame seeds onto the top of the mixture.
- Bake in a preheated oven for approximately 45min at 200ºC
until cooked fully
- Leave to cool a little on a wire tray before cutting into chunky slices and serving.
Per slice: 156kcal, 0.6g fat (Of which saturates: Trace) Carbohydrate 34g
Hugh’s Top Tip:
To check whether your classic brown bread is cooked through just push a sharp knife through the centre of the bread – if it comes back clean your bread is ready.
